A popular pain reliever is back to business after being banned by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In November 2014, the FDA suspended the sale of Celebrex, a drug originally used to treat arthritis and other conditions, and banned it from sales for health reasons. As a result, the company was forced to cut its Celebrex price from $4.50 to $0.90 for 12 weeks.
A spokeswoman for Pfizer said that Celebrex had been suspended from the market since August 2011 due to its association with cancer. "In our view, the FDA should now take this decision on a case-by-case basis as a matter of course and provide appropriate reasons for the action," said the spokeswoman.
The FDA said in a statement: "Although the company remains committed to this action, we believe the action is appropriate and that a decision on the suspension should be made as quickly as possible."
The decision to ban Celebrex was announced after the FDA approved the drug as an arthritis treatment in May. It was the most effective drug ever to be approved to treat the condition.
The agency has been working closely with the FDA to address concerns about its safety and effectiveness, and its latest update is to recommend that Celebrex be removed from the market immediately. It is hoped that the FDA will follow up with a decision to stop Celebrex use in July 2012.
"Celebrex, a widely used anti-inflammatory medicine, is a well-known and successful pain reliever," said Dr. Steven Nissen, the acting Commissioner for Medicine and Health Care. "Its widespread use in the community has been a boon for patients who rely on it for their physical and mental health. In the United States, Celebrex is still available in the form of an oral tablet, capsule, or injection and is approved for many uses. In addition, the FDA has recommended that Celebrex be removed from the market as soon as possible."
But the FDA has also warned that the use of Celebrex can result in side effects such as a high blood pressure, a heart attack, and even stroke, which can lead to death. It was also told that the FDA had also warned about the possibility of a higher risk of breast cancer. The agency warned that there is a risk of developing breast cancer in patients who take the drug. The FDA also warned that patients who have had a stroke or heart attack are at increased risk of dying from the disease.
Celebrex has been withdrawn from the market in two recent years. Last year, the drug was recalled after it was discovered that it increased the risk of a rare type of cancer called breast cancer.
The FDA said that Celebrex "should be withdrawn immediately," saying that it has "no known links to the development of breast cancer or the development of breast cancer in a patient."
The FDA also said that it was concerned about the safety of the drug as a side effect, noting that the drug is used to treat osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The agency also said that the drug should be stopped immediately and that the company will be required to immediately report any suspected side effects to the FDA.
On June 13, 2014, the FDA issued a letter to the company seeking the company to stop using Celebrex. The FDA said that it had not received any reports of adverse events or reports of suicidal ideation, and that it had not received any reports of suicidal behavior or any other adverse events.
The company said that its "full compliance" with the letter was "to discontinue the use of Celebrex by the company in any way whatsoever with respect to any of its marketing and/or advertising activities" and to "continue to exercise full and complete responsibility for the use of Celebrex," and to "provide the company with any and all information for the company that is required by law for future marketing and/or advertising purposes."
In an email to The Times, the company said that it has "been informed by the FDA that there is a serious risk of serious adverse events associated with Celebrex, particularly suicidal ideation and behavior."
On September 10, 2014, the FDA issued a statement to the media urging that the company comply with the letter and that its safety should be assessed by the FDA.
The FDA has not responded to requests for comment. However, a spokeswoman for Pfizer said the company "has a right to withdraw its use of Celebrex in the United States."
The company's other concerns include the withdrawal of Celebrex from the market, the possibility of a heightened risk of breast cancer, and the withdrawal of its other medicines, including a heart attack drug.
